2014 Christmas Drive

dog-cat-christmas-e12915068675032With the holidays fast approaching, we think of our friends and family when we go shopping.  For those that own pets, we often think to put something under the tree for them too … but we rarely remember the animals that will be cared for, even on holidays, that won’t have a family, a tree or a present to open.

K9 Crusaders would like to focus an animal in shelter assist drive, to help Northumberland shelters bring happy holidays to those animals.  We need your help!

It’s very important that people remember that puppies and kittens are not gifts for humans, in fact, humans are a gift to them.  Adoption is a decision that isn’t cute, it’s a life choice, and we can’t stress enough how many animals suffer because the process wasn’t thought through.  The shelters are busting at the seams, and need our help to make life a little more comfortable for these beautiful and well deserving animals. They need donations of quality dog and cat food, treats, cleaning supplies, bowls, litter, puppy formula, grooming supplies, collars, leashes, towels, blankets and laundry supplies, Check the bottom of this post for drop off location within Northumberland. So many people say they love animals, but can’t afford to donate cash, and we totally understand.  Some people doubt that a shelter might use the cash donations, but we truly do need them too.  Vet bills are expensive, and while the fee for adoption does help to offset those costs, shelters are run by volunteers, usually in a donated older building, and the shelter itself still needs, heat, hydro, running water and land taxes that need paying.

If you don’t choose to donate cash, you could donate some spare time to help with the animals and keep them from being so lonely.  Items are also very valuable to the shelters, and these items help the animals live a little more comfortable than they would with just basic needs being met.  Here is a wonderful list of items that we found on a fellow blogging site called The Cub. (no worries, it opens in a new window when you click on the link.)

Of course, if you are cleaning out your home, you know, that spare room the relatives use every year and you store things in for the rest of the year … shelters have need for some of those things too!  Even used household items have value to the animals … take a look at how you can donate your slightly used items; such as fluffy bath mats, toilet seat covers, rubber gloves, sheets, blankets and even batteries!  Have some baby food that you don’t use anymore?  Yup, that can be used too!  Apartment Therapy has a great list of items you can donate, instead of throw away.

Of course, we work with several rescues as well, and with a growing need to pull these animals out of high kill shelters, we have some wonderful, loving people that foster animals in their homes to save them from a fate most don’t want to think about.  Foster homes also need things to make the life of these animals enjoyable, and you can help there too.  By donating pet beds, toys, Canadian Tire money, gas cards (to help us transport), stationary items (to keep their records together), and pet store gift cards (so we can help with food, grooming, and other items), and of course PayPal or E-transfer of funds so we can help pull even more animals to safety.

If you would like to donate a new or used item, please feel free to leave us a comment so we can get back to you, visit our K9 Crusaders page using the link above, or drop off points, such as:
